Thursday, nothing much happened... it was a slow evening. It didn't seem that way when I came, however! I can now see why it is so hard for an evening nurse's aide who comes in at 6:30 when the previous nurse's aide left at 2:00. All the pets are being picked up, leaving dirty kennels, and nurses are running around trying to accomplish all their tasks, trying to save the world. Those poor nurses work so hard, and are always tired.
Something interesting that happened Thursday was a bladder or kidney stone removal (I don't know which, I wasn't in the room) from a cat. Poor kitty, that couldn't have been the most fun surgery ever, but it was good for him. They used kitchen measuring spoons to hold the stones, and there was a spoon called a "dash". I never heard of that measurement being a spoon before!
Saturday: Lots of things happened. Here's a list (I will come back and elaborate on these):
6-toed-cat
Cute kitty! He was here for a surgery of some sort, I think a dental, and I remember when he was done, but still under anesthesia, the nurse held him up and exclaimed, "Look at his feet! Aren't they cute?" He had at least 6 toes on each foot! It was really interesting. Those would have made great snowshoes!
husky "Sonic"
This dog was crazy! I came in, and it wasn't too crazy, but I go to the dog ward, and I hear all this, WOOF WOOF, WOO ARF YIP! Yikes! It was loud! My manager, working before me, had warned me that he barks pretty much the entire time. He did! I had nothing to do in the rest of the hospital, so I went to go clean kennel doors, which takes forever. As I was wiping each individual wire down, Sonic was reminding me he was there. He was in a run, and he was hyper! You wonder how I could tell? I'll show you. He was jumping up and up against the run door, about as high as he possibly could, and nudging the run-opening-latch-thing. If the door wasn't held by a clip, he would have opened it within about a second.
I was walking in and out of the dog ward, and he was always barking. Or if he was asleep, as soon as I walked in he would wake up. Sheesh! Later, I was cleaning something for a while out in the treatment area, and one of the nurse's came in from the dog ward, and said, "I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Sonic was fingerpainting." After a little giggle and a groan, I trudged back. Sure enough, there were great piles of doggy poo all over his run. I carefully got him out, and stuffed him into a little kennel. Thank goodness for hoses! Needless to say, the sewer system now has doggy poo in it. Lovely, I know. I told him he was a "little stinker" (pun intended), and a doofus. He wagged his tail.
But as I was cleaning, I saw something wierd in the poop. I thought, hmm, must be a worm of some sort. I asked the nurse if he got dewormed, and she checked, and reassured me that he did. I got a baggy, and was ready to "collect the specimen", when I looked closer and saw... it was a pop can tab. That's right, folks, whole and metal. See what puppies are eating these days?
vomiting raisin dog, tablet in eye
What do you get when you cross a pound of raisins with a hungry mutt? A sick dog that's at the veterinarian's clinic.
We got a call from the owners, and we heard the receptionist, who took the call, tell us, "I've got a dog who ate a pound of raisins on the phone.....?". The doctor just quickly said, "bring 'im in". Raisins are poisonous, at least for sure in large amounts they are. The matter was settled. When he arrived later, a medium-large dog, who seemed fine but a bit shivering. He might have been nervous. They call for me to come and hold the dog, please, because we're going to make him throw up. This is interesting, I haven't seen forced vomit yet. Not that I wanted to... As I was holding him, a nurse came and quickly shoved a tablet into his eye. I was confused, and thought I was seeing things. Why would something to cause vomit go in his eye? but it did, and it was for faster absorption. Soon enough, he vomited out an entire pound of raisins. Good thing! It was gross. He didn't chew them...
That really makes you want to eat dinner, huh?
