This is a very late post from last weekend's work! Now I work morning instead of evening. It's fun! Last week was very busy, so I didn't have time to write the post. Here it is:
Pot Cookie. The technical term is that the dog accidentally ate some marijuana. How and why it was within reach, I don't know. But... he came in, and they cared for him and put him in the warmed pod to wake up. He was probably in some sort of stupor, because he was not very responsive. The doctor said he was probably very happy, haha!
Anesthesia Assistant: Yep, that's me! I felt very proud to do this, heehee. It's not very difficult, but they were doing dentals, and it wasn't very busy, so I helped monitor the animals, especially an older dog who was getting too much CO2 into his system because of being under anesthesia. I learned that that's more toxic to the brain than a lack of O2 (oxygen), which is interesting. Every time the level of his CO2 went above a certain level, I gave a couple squeezes of the oxygen bag leading to his lungs. It was quite a responsibility! They said don't squeeze to hard-- I think if I did, he would maybe explode, and that would be horrible. So I was careful, and he was fine. He woke up and whimpered the entire time he was there and drove us crazy. I helped with a couple animals in this way, and was holding animals.
Vicious Family. When I came in the morning, there was a lady with three cat carriers coming in. Later, I found out who--three cats, two of which were extremely ferocious. After only doing one or two things to them, not-too-bad things, they hissed and spit and grrred every time we walked around their cage. Haha, the fun part was getting them out for "sleepy drugs", because they were going to be under anesthesia for their dentals. I was assigned to watch one while he was falling asleep, because fat cats sometimes tuck their necks under and can strangle themselves. They said to make sure to bring him out to them ONLY when he was thoroughly asleep! I jokingly agreed, saying that I preferred to keep my life. Fun stuff! I was happy that they left after I left, so it was the tougher nurse's aide's job to put them in their carriers to go home. It's selfish of me, but I've already gotten bitten once, and I have no luck in this. : )
